Why your Wi-Fi password needs to be long

A website can lock you out after a few wrong guesses. Your router can’t protect you the same way. On WPA2-Personal, anyone within range can capture the four-way handshake when a device connects, take it home, and guess passwords offline as fast as their hardware allows. An 8-character password falls quickly. A 20-character random one doesn’t.

WPA3’s SAE handshake closes that offline hole, but many networks run in WPA2/WPA3 transition mode for older devices, so length still matters.

Tips

  • Change the router’s default password, which is often printed on a sticker or derived from the MAC address.
  • Set up a separate guest network and share this QR code for that one.
  • Also change the router’s admin password; it’s a different thing from the Wi-Fi password.
  • Turn off WPS PIN pairing if your router offers it; the PIN method has known weaknesses.

Need a PIN for the router’s WPS or an alarm panel instead? Use the PIN generator.

Questions people ask

How long should a Wi-Fi password be?

WPA2 and WPA3 personal passwords can be 8 to 63 characters. Because anyone who captures your network’s handshake can guess offline without limits, use at least 16 random characters, or 20 if you like round numbers. Length costs nothing here, since most devices join by QR code or remember the password.

What characters can a Wi-Fi password contain?

The standard allows printable ASCII characters. Some older devices, smart TVs and printers struggle with symbols or are awkward to type them on, so the default here is letters and digits with look-alike characters removed. Turn on symbols if all your devices handle them.

How does the Wi-Fi QR code work?

It encodes a standard string of the form WIFI:T:WPA;S:network-name;P:password;; that the camera apps on iOS (11 and later) and Android (10 and later) recognise. Scanning it offers to join the network without typing. The code is drawn in your browser; the password is not sent anywhere.

Is WPA3 more secure than WPA2?

Yes. WPA3-Personal uses SAE (Simultaneous Authentication of Equals), which stops attackers from capturing a handshake and guessing the password offline. A long random password still matters, especially on WPA2 or in WPA2/WPA3 transition mode.
